Plastic Surgery of the Face – BALDNESS AND CAPILLARY GRAFTS
This operation is one that has most progressed in the last 20 years.
In early days it consisted of removing small circular islands from the scalp at the posterior area of the head where the hair strands have no genetic message of falling precociously. These islands, with a 2.3 or 3.0mm diameter, were transplanted to the bald area.
Although the hair growed efficiently, the circular islands and the too delineated boundaries caused an unnatural aspect, resembling the so called “doll's hair”.
The technique has evolved much after removal of islands from the healthy hair was replaced by micro-islands: a strip of hairy tissue is microscopically analyzed and separated into hundreds of micro-islands with 1.2 or 3 hair bulbs each.
These micro-islands are inserted into the receptor site through minimal perforations with a needle.

One can say that the results are now very natural, almost perfect. The transplanted hairs “take on” and a large percentage grow naturally, can be combed after three postoperative months and trimmed after 6 months. All this added to the advantage that these strands have no tendency to fall and possibly remain over a life time.
